LONDON, July 23 -- The government of the United Kingdom issued the following news:
Robert Richens,aged35, of Luther Street, Oxford, had his sentence increased by3yearsand5monthsafter theAttorneyGeneral, Ellie Reeves KC MP, referred his case to the Court of Appeal under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme.
The court heard thatRachaelVaughanwas killed byRichensfollowing aprolonged controlling and abusive relationship.On29 May 2025,Richensfatally assaultedRachaelat her home in Abingdonwhere nearby residents reported hearing screams during theattack.
Rachaelsustained multiple serious injuriesas a result oftheviolentand prolongedassault.After her death,Richensremained at the property for several hours,attemptingto clean the scene before leaving, later returning, and calling the police.

Robert Richens brutally murdered Rachael Vaughan in her own home, the place where she should have been safest.
Rachael wassubjected torelentlesslycontrolling andabusive behaviour.I welcome the Court of Appeal's decision to increaseRichens' sentence. Domesticmurderdestroyslivesandsentencesmustreflect thehorrorof such crimes.
On 6 February 2026,at Oxford Crown Court, Robert Richens was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 16years and 1 month after pleading guilty to murder.
On Thursday 23 July 2026,at theCourt of Appeal,Richens'minimum termwas increasedto19 years and6months.
