U.K., Oct. 13 -- UK Parliament issued the following news:

Responding to the launch today of UKRI’s voluntary exit scheme, the Chair of the Science and Technology Committee, Chi Onwurah MP, said:

"Whilst voluntary redundancies are always a difficult process, when Sir Ian Chapman appeared before our committee earlier this year, he made a strong case for reform within UKRI. I welcome UKRI's emphasis on ensuring the organisation can maximise its impact across all regions of the UK- something our recent report on innovation, growth and the region identified as a key priority.

“However, serious questions remain about the implications of this voluntary exit scheme. I’m concerned about what this means for curiosity-driven research, and in particular its impact on the Science and Technology Facilities Council, which is already facing financial pressures. Greater transparency is needed about the scale of the scheme, the savings it expects to deliver, which groups will be most affected and the impact it could have on UKRI’s ability to fulfil its objectives.”
